Four Police Officers Arrested Over Extortion Of 204,000 Naira from Students In Rivers

The Rivers State Police command has arrested and detained four Police Officers attached to Operation Puff Adder tactical Unit who allegedly extorted Two hundred and four thousand naira from a 200 Level Student of Ignatius Ajuru University, Mr.Kingsley Dike.

Their arrest followed an order by the Commissioner of Police, Mr.Eboka Friday shortly after members of the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign led the student to the office of the Commissioner of Police to lodge a formal compliant on the matter.

Speaking on the development, a Lawyer with the Rights group Mr.Charles Edward commended the commissioner for the step he took on the matter .

Mr Edward further urged the Police to ensure a thorough investigation into the matter and if any of the officer is found culpable , should be arraigned in court to serve as deterrent to others.

Meanwhile the Student, Mr Dike in an interview with our Correspondent explained that he was on his way home last week Friday at about 10pm in a bolt when the Policemen stopped him and brought him down from the vehicle.

Mr Dike said after a search was conducted on him and his fellow student, the Police men took them to their base at Airport road Aluu despite the fact that nothing was found on them.

He explained that at the station, the Police officers ordered him to remove the code on his phone and went through his phone and found nothing.

Mr Dike revealed that the Police officer threw them in the cell on Friday night and brought them out on Saturday morning and ordered them with threats to write statement that they were internet fraudsters .

The student stated that for fear of being killed they wrote they were internet fraudsters after which the Police officers gave them an account number which they transferred 204,000 naira before they were released on Saturday.

As of the time of filing this report the four accused Police Officers are being detained at State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, SCIID in PortHarcourt while the money extorted by the Police Officers from the student had been recovered.

When contacted the Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Grace Iringe-Koko denied knowledge on the incident, described the information as false .
