“No baby died at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital” ~ Prof Lucky Onotai

by Area Talk

The University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital has debunked the news making the rounds of the death of babies in incubator, says no atom of truth, describing it as fake news.

The Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committe CMAC UPTH, Prof Lucky Onotai in an interview said no baby died in the Neo-natal unit of the hospital due to power outage in the hospital.

Prof. Onotai said “even though there’s power challenge, the hospital has a back up generator which the Hospital makes use of.

“Those Saying all this are far from the truth and should be ignored. If at all what they are saying is true, where are the mother’s of the dead babies? They should mention the name of any they know.

” having a power challenge is not a new thing in Nigeria. Every sector in Nigeria today are having same power challenge but there’s always a generator for backup.

“The transformer had a challenge which we have fixed but there’s no day we don’t put on the generator. So is not true,” he said.

Speaking with Mrs Peace, one of the mothers on admission in the hospital with her preterm baby at the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU).

She said ever since she have been on admission for over one month, she haven’t seen any baby died and even her baby is still in the incubator receiving care.

“I have been here for over a month cause of my preterm baby. I have not heard about the dead of any baby” She said.

Power outage though isn’t a new thing in Nigeria due to the constant collapse of the Nigeria National grid

Nigeria generates up to 8,000 Mega Watts.

Federal Government has blamed the constant power outages in the country due to the activities of terrorists who has been vandalizing the power infrastructures.

There has been blackout across the nation since on 12th June 2022 when the national grid collapsed.
