A constitutional lawyer has lambasted the Rivers State House of Assembly led by Rt Hon Martins Amewhule over an attempt to amend the law to create room for council chairmen tenure elongation.
Prof Nwokocha described the attempt as undemocratic and unconstitutional, saying members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have no powers to amend such law.
He said the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria does not create room for such rascality.
He said Section 1, Sub- Section 3 of the Constitution as amended is very clear on the membership of the House.
He noted that the lawmakers are no longer members of the Assembly, according to the Section of the Constitution until the court declares them otherwise.
He insisted that until the court makes such pronouncement, their activities at the Rivers State House of Assembly are null and void.
The senior lecturer with the Rivers State University advised them to tread with caution in order not to over heat the polity as tenure of the elected chairmen remains sacrosanct.
He said their tenure remains barely two months to go as no amount of false claim will change it.
He said when their tenure is over, it is now left for the Governor to conduct fresh elections.
