The Rivers State Police Command has officially announced the tragic killing of an Inspector by unidentified gunmen who ambushed and attacked police officers during a routine stop and search operation at the Eliozu Flyover in Obio/Akpo Local Government Area of the state on Wednesday night.
In a statement released by the command’s spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, it was revealed that the gunmen arrived in a carton-colored Sienna bus with fully tinted glasses, approaching from the Rumuodumaya axis near Port Harcourt. The attackers opened fire on the police team, resulting in the death of the Inspector.
Despite the loss, the police team bravely fought back, exchanging fire with the assailants and managing to neutralize one of them who was wearing a mask. The other members of the gang narrowly escaped.
The statement expressed deep sorrow over the incident and assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to bring the culprits to justice. The Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, emphasized that those who commit acts of violence against law enforcement officers or citizens will face the consequences of the law.
The command urged citizens to remain calm and continue with their daily activities, emphasizing their commitment to maintaining peace and security in the face of such challenges. Condolences were extended to the family and colleagues of the fallen Inspector, with a promise that his sacrifice will not be forgotten.
This tragic event comes after the recent death of a former Divisional Police Officer, Bako Angbashim, who was ambushed and killed by a cult gang. The command has been relentless in pursuing the perpetrators, with successful operations leading to the elimination of the wanted cult leader in a recent raid.
The commitment of the Rivers State Police Command to protecting the lives and property of the citizens remains unwavering, despite the dangers faced by law enforcement officers. The community is urged to stand together against those who seek to disrupt the peace and harmony of society.
