Just In: PDP NWC Meets, Set to Review Rivers Congress, Others

by Area Talk

A meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party is currently taking place at the party’s headquarters in Abuja.

The purpose of the meeting is to address the issues surrounding the Rivers state congress, as well as similar challenges faced by other state chapters.

The meeting, which commenced at 3 p.m., is being attended by key party officials, including acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, and National Organizing Secretary Umar Bature, among others.

A senior NWC member, speaking on the condition of anonymity, disclosed that the meeting will assess all matters related to the congresses, including those in Rivers and other states encountering difficulties.

“This is our most recent meeting following the ward and state congresses. The NWC will examine all issues concerning the congresses, including those in Rivers and other states facing challenges,” the source stated.

The meeting was delayed for three weeks due to escalating tensions within the party.

The Rivers state congresses have been a contentious issue, particularly between Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, and the PDP Governors Forum, which has publicly supported current Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The political dispute intensified on August 24 when PDP governors called for a review of the Rivers Congresses and affirmed Fubara’s leadership in the state.

Wike, angered by the support for Fubara, threatened on August 31 to cause chaos in the governors’ states if they continued to interfere in Rivers matters.

In response, on September 3, the PDP Governors’ Forum condemned Wike’s threat as irresponsible.
